This guide is intended to give the visitor of St. John's Hospital in Bruges, Belgium, a thorough understanding of its history and art. The hospital is one of Europe's best-preserved medival hospital complexes. In addition to the site's attraction as a distinctive historic building, it is also home to six exquisite paintings by the Flemish Primitive artist Hans Memling.4/5(1). The museum also houses a fantastic collection of paintings by Hans Memling. My favorite was the triptych depicting the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine. The center frame centers around the figures of the Virgin and Child, with Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist looking on from the left and right respectively.

Many of Memling's well-known religious works were painted for the Hospital of St. John in Brugge. These include Adoration of the Magi and six panels depicting St. Ursula's journey to Rome, which he painted for the hospital's shrine to that saint. Memling was a master of portraiture. The faces he painted with careful detail glow with life. Hans Memling (also spelled Memlinc; c. – 11 August ) was a German painter who moved to Flanders and worked in the tradition of Early Netherlandish painting. He was born in the Middle Rhine region, and probably spent his childhood in place: Seligenstadt, Germany.
